Morning Keynotes

9:45-10:30 a.m. Opening Keynote: Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan is a Seattle-based photographic artist who portrays the detritus of our mass culture, piles of cell phones, computer circuit boards, aluminum cans, and the like. His work is exhibited widely in the US and Europe, and has been featured in print media, blogs, documentary films, and radio and television programs worldwide.

In this presentation Chris will illustrate the problem of electronic waste through photographs and figures.
10:30-11:15 a.m. Design Keynote: Mary Lou Jepsen, Chief Technology Officer, OLPC (One Laptop Per Child), M.I.T.

The OLPC project represents probably the most complete example of "design for sustainability" and social good. Addressing environmental, economic and social needs, the XO laptop is a shining example of how a consumer electronics product can truly incorporate green design and engineering while providing enhanced social benefit.

Mary Lou Jepsen is a pioneer in display technologies. Previously she was an executive at Intel. At OLPC she is responsible for overall hardware management, as well as display and systems innovation. She is also a professor at the MIT Media Lab.

Jeff Omelchuck, Executive Director EPEAT, Green Electronics Council

Moderator: Jennifer Van Der Meer, Chair of 02 New York

The electronics industry has recognized the need to go green, the question next is: how do we do this, and how can we have the biggest impact? This panel will explore the challenge of going green applied to the entire product lifecycle, from raw material, to manufacture, and use to reuse, recycling, or disposal. Examples of environmental initiatives of leading consumer electronics companies will be highlighted, from material choices to take-back and recycling programs that address end-of-life and e-waste issues. We will identify opportunities that have the greatest potential for lowering our environmental impact, and the role of the consumer to bring about this change.
